AWARE Outdoor Challenge 2007

i-Decide for me!

When it comes to losing weight most of us know the whys and the hows, but is it as simple as just eating healthy and exercise? For some it is a battle they face throughout their lives that affects their health, the way the society treats them and the way they look at themselves. It is a journey more than dieting, more than a quick fix. It can sometimes be lonely and frustrating especially in an environment where food is available 24/7 and eating and snacking our norms and culture.

Here are 2 ladies who have decided to transform their lives…

Adeline is 34yrs old who gained 15kg after delivery, leading to painful gastric reflux and is advised by her surgeon to lose at least 6kg. She has a BMI of 24.3. She is desk bound for long hours and lacks the time and energy for exercise after work.

Sophia, 26yrs old, has gained 14kg through the years due to large food portions and lack of exercise. She has high cholesterol, feels lethargic and has difficulties keeping up with her active son. She weighs 72kg (BMI 29.2) and was awaken about her own health after her mother suffered from a stroke last year. And like many out there, they are deeply troubled by the stigma attached to their weight. Adeline missed a job opportunity and tries to avoid gatherings with her old friends, while Sophia has to face her relatives’ constant remarks about her appearance.

Enough is enough and they have made a decision to seek help from their doctor. Today they are not merely hoping for a change but are determined to take concrete actions. Gone are the days of yoyo dieting and disappointments. Now they are enjoying meals with their family and friends. They do not need to starve themselves or avoid the foods they like and need not make sudden, drastic changes in their lifestyle.

They have embarked in a medically supervised weight management program called i-Decide, where they work with a doctor and nurse counselor, together with support from a nutritionist and exercise expert to achieve and maintain their goals. A prescribed medication is taken once daily which helps them feel full faster with smaller portions and also maintain their optimal metabolic rate. This allows them to develop sustainable healthy eating habits, eliminate cravings and still having energy to exercise.

The iDECIDE Program has enabled Adeline to lose 1kg in 2 weeks and Sophia has lost 4kg in 2 months. With this success they are ready to undertake the AWARE Women’s Outdoor Challenge 8km run. They are training 2-3 times a week at Sky the Premier Fitness Club, are eating healthier with smaller portions and losing weight the safe and effective way. These ladies are now making the difference they never dreamt of, with courage and determination to go the distance none thought they could ever achieve. Family and friends can see the difference in them and most importantly they feel healthier and happier.

Although the AWARE Women’s Outdoor Challenge is in March, they are by far already winners.
